Audio Sauce: Contimental Drift
By Stephen Jewell
Audio Sauce is Wellington-based Miles Tilly and 'Contimental Drift' is the follow-up to his 2002 debut, 'Diversecity'. Fortunately, this is a considerably more consistent affair with Tilly proving that his knack for creating catchy beats is about as great as his penchant for terrifically terrible punned album titles. It originally began life as a concept album of sort, which was meant to resemble skipping through a crackly old radio. Remnants of that idea remain in the snatches of static and odd vocals that appear between the tracks. The album is centred around the insidiously infectious Bee Bop, whose impressive animated video by Paul Herschell won a Special Commendation at the 2003 Music Clip Awards. But unlike Hops Scotch on 'Diversecity,' Bee Bop doesn't overshadow the remainder of 'Contimental Drift' which includes several soulful drum'n'bass style collaborations with vocalist Bex Riley, who also shined on Timmy Schumacher and Baitercell's mighty What's Down Low. Excellent, eye-catching design and packaging helps make this capitalrecordings release stick out on the shop shelves.
