Tha Feelstyle: Break It To Pieces

By Gareth Shute
A great hip hop album for summer, though this shouldn't be taken to mean that it is any way lightweight or superficial. Tha Feelstyle worked with King Kapisi to compose Screems from the Old Plantation and his current work seems like a clear progression and refinement of this style. Savage and Sontan (Lost Tribe) both feature on the album, though more surprising is the inclusion of Shayne Carter and Camillia Temple (NZ Idol finalist). In fact, a whole array of singers feature on the album and the melodies show an ingenious mix of Pacifican flavour and American R'n'B influence. However, it is Tha Feelstyle's sharp rapping style that will really grab listeners. His flow is so consistent that after hearing the half-dozen tracks which are rapped in Samoan, you could be forgiven for thinking that rap music was created in that language - the repeated vowel sounds make for a whole new style of delivery. Highly recommended.
