Mike Garner: Drivin' With The Blues
By Mike Moroney
Garner has a voice with great character, ideally suited to the blues that he plays so well, with that generic singer's accent that never sounds either contrived or overtly kiwi. More than half the tracks are his own compositions and these sit well in quality and style with those of Son House and Ralph McTell that he has reworked here. Garner plays fingerstyle Beltona (handmade) resonator guitar and blues harp with a proficiency and ease that is convincing, often against the great electric guitar sound of (presumably, brother) Paul Garner - who incidentally emailed his guitar tracks in from London. This is more of the trademark sound of the Boatshed Studio in Tauranga and Jacombs et al of Kokomo. Good songs, well sung with plenty of grit. 'Drivin' With The Blues' is one of the best acoustic blues albums to come out of this little country.
