Roger Greenaway: Wayt
By Mahinarangi Tocker
Roger Greenaway's debut gives us drama, lightness, NZ-flavoured rock, pacific jazz, and wonderful ballads, Greenaway-style. Every song has grown on me. I keep going back to the title track Wayt. Lyrical simplicity, wistful breathy notes that almost feel as if Greenaway's fragile vibrato will stop his next vocal sound but he manages to sneak in to notes like an unexpected visitor that I don't mind listening to. From the opening Peace Creature, with it's danceable insistence and jazzy Latin emotive brass section featuring adventurous contemporary composer and saxophonist, Jeff Henderson, Nick van Dijk - trombone and Tahu Tikimaui - trumpet, I'm hooked to last note of the final song, Aah. A very nice production by Rikki Morris who has his stamp over this album. Roger Greenaway brings together a musical whanau of great musicians, and performances to dance, sing and melt too.
