Pine: Akira Sunrise

You will not find a better summer album this year. There, I said it. One rotation of 'Akira Sunrise' and I feel sure you will agree with that rather bold statement. This clever Christchurch trio has done a smashing job with their second album. I recall first seeing them a couple of years ago, opening for Neil Finn on his national tour, with nothing more than a snare drum, a guitar and a melodica. I was very impressed. But while their first album 'LongPlayer' was a collection of very fine tunes, the tracks always felt a little unfinished to me. Now I am forced to eat my sunhat, as this stunning follow up album has knocked me off my feet. The collection of melodic pop, subtle grooves and gorgeous choruses make for a perfect summer soundtrack, and the wonderful album sleeve art paints exactly that. By the time you've listened to Bottlenecks and Seesaw you will know exactly what I'm talking about. This is a heavenly album, from a clever band.
