Katy Soljak: The Madonna of Godzone
By Tony Parker
Waiheke Island resident Katy Soljack has a 20 year history of music and travel that has seen her writing and performing both here and in America. 'The Madonna of Godzone' is the culmination of that musical journey as it gathers recordings made in LA, Auckland and Waiheke. Drawing on the personal and at times political, Soljack's songs are little stories of love and loss placed in a rootsy folk/blues setting with plenty of acoustic guitar and vocal harmonies, often evoking echoes of early Indigo Girls. Excursions into Latin, reggae and electronica create some needed diversity and show eclecticism that reflects her influences. The LA recorded tracks however highlight a rockier side of Soljack that does seem at odds with the rest of the material. Lyrically Soljack's approach is almost poetic and she shows a keen eye for detail that makes the characters in her songs believable in their struggle for a better deal. Out on Gala Records.
