Minuit: The 88
By Jessie Scoullar
The debut album from Minuit sold 600 copies on its first day in record stores, and the entire initial run of several thousand has since sold out. What it is about Minuit's sound that's so good is the particular bridging of rock'n'roll with electronic breaks, formed by producers Ryan Beehre and Paul Dodge, embroiled with Ruth Carr's singularly remarkable vocal talents. These songs have volume, in the spacious sense of the word. They evoke new worlds, strange places inviting exploration and promising rewards. Carr's exquisite vocals enhance clever lyrics, provoking reflection and painting pictures. Through the mashing remix process they become an implicit component of the entire sound. The quality is consistent throughout, with highlights including remixed and remade versions of older tracks like Except You and Aires, as well as newer tracks like the edgy Claire, Species II (check out the video!) and the remarkable Body-Shaped Box. Mastered by Chris Chetland. Released through independent label Tardus Music.
