Wordperfect: Spellcheck

By Andrew Hughes
It has been a long, winding road for M.C battle veteran/ promoter Word Perfect, but this year he has finally arrived with his debut effort - 15 tracks of old and new material released on his own independent label 4pp Records. Including production from the likes of DJ Logikal, Finsta, Rob Lundon, Australia's Weapon X and others, the beats bring about an old school vibe with looped over breaks, synthesized and sampled instruments. Word Perfect transcends pop (Real Life Reel, I'm Not Angry), love (Do You See), and consciousness (Why Boys Cry), but sadly each style comes across exaggerated and sounds either too formulaic, emotional or overly garrulous. Relief comes via the battle track collabo with Hamish Clark titled War for Peace. With a fat double bass and an eerie melody, the end result is thought provoking and articulate. Not one for the hardcore hip hop connoisseur, but suitable as a gateway to hip hop for younger listeners, as Word Perfect sends positive messages with user friendly word-play.
