Wendyhouse: Pan

By Renee Jones
Wendyhouse are not known to play by the rules - check out their 1994 album 'Hot Action Plastic' for some great social commentary and good humour. On 'Pan' the duo have essentially rolled two albums into one - EE Monk looks after the left channel while Mr Pudding takes care of the right. If your stereo has a balance control, you can listen to each 'album' separately or put them together to get the overall effect. Track titles and lengths were predetermined, but from there each was left to his own devices, resulting in some tracks which work better on their own! Some do work nicely together, such as Window Seat and File Under Died Trying. Both use an array of collaborators and instruments; Pudding draws on a mind-boggling range of samples (stepladder and a sandpapered Robert Plant CD anyone!?) and Monk's tracks tend toward being guitar and song-based, although his music on One Bored In Heaven is delightfully atmospheric. If you'd like to try something unconventional, you can have a lot of fun with this - and you get two albums for the price of one! stinkispinkis@yahoo.com
