Martin Winch: Guitar Song
By Mike Moroney
Predictable and perfectly produced. It surprised me to learn that many of the pieces were original because they have that comfortable recognition factor that sits well among the few carefully chosen covers. This all-instrumental album builds on the Bert Weedon tradition of smooth guitar solos over lush backing, another great dinner music recording on the heels of his 'Espresso Guitar' albums, both of which achieved platinum status here. I can't help wondering if Winch, arguably the finest jazz/rock guitarist this country has produced, has become a little cynical in his work. Maybe I'm just hanging out for more Pat Metheny and less Bert, more hints of the flair and originality of the 1860 Band guitarist that blew me away in the '70s. This album will do very well because it is very good. Look for it under "easy listening".
