Ride On Estrada: The Discreet Charm of Ride On Estrada

By Claire Nelson
You may not have heard of these quirky incomers from Christchurch, but you should. Eclectic and raw, the eight songs were all recorded live at a member's house, and then the mix downs and overdubs were done later. A more professional production might have done the album more justice, but at the same time, there is a raw, amateur edge to the music which is almost endearing. For musicians who have only been doing the band thing for a couple of years, this is an impressive debut. It's slightly disjointed at times, with the tracklist starting out as soft and hypnotic as early Stereobus, and suddenly becoming an angsty rock'n'roll explosion before settling down again. Ride on Estrada seem to have no plans to mask what is clearly a touch of madness amongst them. What fun! Available in limited quantities from Polite Albino Records.
