Nairobi Trio: Safari

By Mike Moroney
Another eclectic collection of originals from these Auckland swingers that have become a sort of Hot Club d' Aotearoa. This album has some great songs on it, songs that would grace any pop chart and, as always, the musicianship is superb - including some of the most extreme use of a wah-wah pedal I've ever heard! The fiddle playing of Richard Adams is occasionally reminiscent of Jean-Luc Ponty in sound if not entirely in style and the sax playing of long-time Nairobi-hanger-on Andrew Dixon is absolutely inspired. 'Safari' is an appropriate title as we get around a bit on this recording with every style from European style ballads to New Orleans gumbo. All in all a very pleasing album with an easy mix of instrumentals and strangely catchy songs.
