Cheryl Anderson: What Lay Within
By Rachel Fallon
This is the debut, independently released album from a young Southland singer who shows great vocal strength and potential. All tracks are original material written by Cheryl and represent various genres ranging from ska to pop rock, perhaps expressing her lifelong influences as is the case with many a first album. Stand out tracks for me are the acoustic ballad Sunshine which sent shivers down my spine, and the seemingly Skunk Anansie influenced title track. Production is very basic, recorded at Riverland Studio, Invercargill, sounding more live or demo-like than studio quality. The musicianship is of a fairly good quality however with the producer Craig Allott and engineer Leon McElhinney taking care of most of the instrumentation. The album is available through Riverland Promotions email: riverlandpro@xtra.co.nz.
