Microrave: Cocktail Cookbook
By Tony Parker
From the CD cover through to the 8-track recording and basic musical structure of their songs, Microrave demonstrate firmly their lo-fi/DIY approach to making music. Eccentric and slightly weird also comes to mind with their dress up box style of stage attire, slightly punkish sound and the operatic vocal style of singers Cas Simonsen and Ray Beals. Although lending a certain amount of charm to proceedings, this can be unsettling as occasionally things take on a sort of demented cabaret feeling complete with between song patter. Considering Beals' other role performing rant poetry to tape loops as Rayzor Doll and several other members having never performed in bands before, the band's style comes as no surprise. Still they all sound like they had a ball making this album and sometimes you can't ask for more than that.
