Deja Voodoo: Brown Sabbath

By Shaun Chait
I'm not one to normally do humour in my music, so I'll happily admit my first experience of Deja Voodoo live only came about because I happened to have a free ticket. The lads converted me that night, and while they will always be more engaging live, this CD does them justice. The songs here are much like the stunts performed an a certain TV show - short, sharp, and dangerous. A big old rock album that borrows heavily from the likes of Metallica, AC/DC and Iron Maiden, 'Brown Sabbath' is also during it's best moments insanely catchy. Many bands would gladly give their guitarist to write the riffs Deja Voodoo have in abundance. Opening with two killer anthems - We Are Deja Voodoo and Beers, the lads then pile into the datsun and attempt to jump over the Exponents' State Building with the brilliant ode Today, Tomorrow, Timaru. The middle section of the album does let it down a bit. Lots of big guitars and a simple formula, but with four truly memorable songs out of 11, that's a pretty healthy strike rate for a once fictional band. Out on Liberation Music
