Fang: Swim Up Stream
By Claire Nelson
From the first few seconds of violin, which turns into a mesh of keys, guitar and rhythms, I was hooked. Then Something Good leapt out and has been stuck in my head ever since. Fang's third album is constantly full of surprises. Crystal Clear is an absolutely stunning track, and Yellow is so much like Blondie that I had to make sure I was still listening to the same CD. Despite most of the band being rather new recruits to the Fang clan, the core of this now 5-piece have been doing this long enough now and this time have got it right. Bronwen Robertson, Sonya Waters, Tom Clark and Brignall Wood bring a perfect mix of eccentricity to their individual efforts, and bass player Ben Howe (Arch Hill Records' maestro) gives it a perfect polish in the studio. The collection of sounds and the eclectic mix of moods all come together brilliantly. Thank you Fang, an absolute gem of an album.
