The Dellburgoes: Raw Star Guitars
By Peter Dent
It's funny, because I started listening to this record before I read the press material (as I usually do), and immediately thought The Datsuns! The Dellburgoes have the same hard-hitting rock'n'roll style: that swagger, that attitude, those fretboard runs. I wasn't surprised when I read that The Dellburgoes had played support to The Datsuns (amongst many others) - they would have gone together like salt and pepper! The Dellburgoes consist of songwriters Rex Bourke (lead vocals/guitar) and Gareth Evans (lead guitar/keyboards), along with guitarists Dee Dee Clark and Johnny Virgin, bassist Phil Calder and drummer Leighton Faulkner. They live in Greymouth, Christchurch and Wellington; together, they form the take-no-prisoners, kick-ass rock'n'roll troop you hear on 'Raw Star Guitars'. Rex Bourke's voice really reminds me of Doc Neeson from The Angels...perhaps another influence? Engineered and mixed by Christchurch sound stalwart Rob Mayes, and Gareth Evans, self released, this album should be in your CD collection if you like it hard, raw and loud!
