Edmund Cake: Downtown Puff
By Julie Harris
Edmund Cake is everything that is right about NZ music. An original songwriter whose off-beat lyrics compliment the technically experimental sound he creates. Edmund Cake was one third of Flying Nun's Bressa Creeting Cake. While the band broke up shortly after the release of their fantastic self-titled debut album, he collaborates here with former bandmates Geoff Maddock and Joel Wilton (both now of Goldenhorse). This is only one of many musical collaborations on this album that unfortunately go uncredited on the liner notes. Produced and recorded by Cake, the album has a restrained but delicately layered sound especially on tracks You're Watching Me and The Airshow. Showing his versatility as a songwriter Cake moves effortlessly through the deconstructed pop of Gunga to the one take improvised narrative My Son the Harpist. Parts of this album remind me of another great Kiwi Band Mëstar with its gentle harmonies and clever song structures. 'Dowtown Puff', out on Lil Chief Records, is original, humorous and a welcome addition to any music collection
