Bailterspace: Bailterspace
By Gareth Shute
Since 1987 Bailterspace have tested the boundary between alternative guitar rock and art noise. Their early tracks were grinding repetitive pieces with dryly spoken/screamed vocals, reminiscent of Alister Parker's previous band The Gordons. Gradually they took on a more refined approach, delivering almost whispered vocals over powerful waves of guitar and machine-like rhythms. This compilation begins with a number of their more approachable space rock tracks X and Splat, before moving on to the older, noise-ridden tracks Grader Spader and Tanker. A couple of rare tracks are also included: GlimmerDot (which was only released on 45" in the US) and Wammo out-take, At 5. Although a few popular Bailterspace tracks, like Retro and Fish Eye, are absent from the album it is still is a great introduction to the now defunct band and will ensure they continue to reach listeners who are interested in sonic exploration rather than easy-to-digest rock.
