Various: Ultra-Sound Volume 1
By Rachel Fallon
Following on from previous Sugarlicks Recordings compilations, the same Auckland based label, in conjunction with DJ/producer Manuel Bundy, has gathered together another eclectic mix of local musical talent. Titled after Auckland's Khuja Lounge monthly club night where many of the artists perform live, this album displays the label's agenda to bring future soul to the forefront of Aotearoa music. Nat Rose sets the scene beautifully with her debut single, leading the way effortlessly through the compilation's different flavours and genres of modern electronica, mixing hip hop, broken beat, dub and street soul with live instrumentation and percussion. Other stand out tracks are a cool One Million Dollars remix, a Mark de Clive Lowe dance tune with wicked vocals by Cherie Mathieson, and a slick mc style number from Ahmen Mahal of Rhombus, under the guise of Murk 108. The cultural diversity of the artists includes African, Arabic and Asian as well as various Pacific. Distributed by BMG NZ, with the help of label contacts it is apparently receiving airplay as far a field as Europe and Canada. If it's kickback, chill out NZ original sounds you're after, then this one is for your wish list.
