Bill Ward: Bill Ward Live At The Bonneville Brewery
By Nick Batt
Returning like Shrek the sheep from the deep south, Bill Ward blasts it out from the Bonneville Brewery hidden somewhere near the Kaimai Ranges. It has been some time since the member of 60's band Human Instinct released an album and while he may no longer be sharing the stage with The Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues or more recently Hammond Gamble, he is still passionate about music. This album was recorded by Tony Ricketts in the basement where the brewery is located with a small but enthusiastic crowd and is very much a 'live' recording - live in the 'sounds like you are hearing it through a bedroom wall' sense of the word. Supported by his daughter Kim Ward (backing vocals), Mike Kirk (lead guitar), Peri Grant (harmonica and percussion) and Vivienne Genet (piano) Bill romps his way through 12 original songs often pausing between numbers to give some background to the song. The material is pretty much folk/ballad/blues and while the crowd seems to be receptive (likely due to the brewery's product), I think you really had to be there to fully appreciate it.
