Word Collective: Salad Bones
By Renee Jones
This intriguing album is the result of collaboration between six poets from Wellington's Word Collective with a range of Wellington musicians; including, legend has it, musicians from bands such as Rhombus and Paselode. Producer Dr Shopper arranged the project so that the poets and musicians didn't meet during production and the musicians were given free reign on the audio. The project must have been a lot of fun to work on, with creative license encouraged all round, and the result is an enjoyable marriage of spoken word deftly melded with music. The themes of the poems are as varied as the poets themselves, as are their delivery styles. The music ranges from atmospheric to more rhythmic accompaniments; some tracks use the music as a bed for the poems, others integrate the two more closely such as Him Time by Felix Preval where vocals from the poem are looped and manipulated to create the music. Poets include C.W. Ireson, Robyn Kenealy and Ciara Mulholland; and T-Bone Vocelli and Sstimuluss. Recommended for those who enjoy spoken word and a more experimental approach to music, this is well worth checking out.
