Various: Pacific Ultra Sound 2017

By Ania Glowacz
The contents of this compilation CD are exactly as labeled. Soulful, Pacific-flavoured grooves and vibes, embellished with elements of reggae, ragga, dub, jazz, hip hop, funk and le francais (the Noumea influence, I guess). It's a very slick, polished affair, although not in any sanitised way. Freedom of expression - musically and lyrically, is key, and the production is supremely warm, with a particularly fat bass production throughout. The ingredients include afrobeats in a Pacific context, conscious lyrics, te reo, dancehall, a superb live feel, amongst all the other various warm musical fuzzies. All in a contemporary urban setting with nods to previous pioneers. There are too many points of interest to list here, but you can take your cue from the respected music artists represented; Substax, Brother J, Nat Rose, Solephonic (Manuel Bundy), Rhombus's frontman Ahmen Mahal, One Million Dollars, Jahlicious, an exclusive track from OG - the list goes on. You can capture the smooth and simmering vibes by picking up this very fine compilation, which includes some music videos and wallpapers also. At the very least a superb introduction to some top Aotearoa talent blowing up - or about to.
