Luke Casey: Tinpot Guru
By Tony Parker
Luke Casey is known for being the driving force behind rock band Eye TV as well as being one half of Pacific jazz duo The Relaxomatic Project. Now with Eye TV no more and Relaxomatic working on a third album at a "casual" pace Casey has had the time to strike out on his own with this solo effort that takes the pop/rock approach of Eye TV and marries it to the harder edged rock sounds that he grew up musically with. It begins in a low key manner though with the acoustic Startin' Over but before too long the power chords kick in and Casey's big drum sound takes over. By the time Riffage appears midway through proceedings a very convincing hard rock/metal vibe has been reached, something reinforced by the Deep Purple-ish chugging guitars and spaced out organ of Tim. Overall the songs retain Casey's melodic instincts and his almost choirboy like voice works well in the hard rock setting making for a solid first time up solo effort.
