The Shocking Pinks: Dance the Dance Electric

By Shaun Chait
The Shocking Pinks are big on soundscapes, using guitar, bass, percussion and synths to create their own take on wall of noise. Many of their songs take on an instrumental bend, some even start out that way, and vocals are often of the minimal variety. Their sound is a kind of cross pollination of garage rock'n'roll swagger, disco grooves, and indie Dunedin. It's Hard To Breathe brings to mind New Order/Joy Division, while Affection has a Blondie feel to it. The dub touches on In The Labyrinth make for an unusual combination, and elsewhere influences including The Clash, HDU, and The Subliminals seem to rear their heads. I liked the lo-fi indie feel, and the artwork complemented and completed the package perfectly. This is a throwback of a different nature to what we've been bombarded with recently. It's nice to listen to stuff that's not instantly catchy; my only concern is that maybe this album not memorable enough. On Christchurch label Pinacolada Records.
