Brilleaux: Eight Track Style
By Tony Parker
Lee Brilleaux once fronted English R'n'B merchants Dr Feelgood. Tauranga's Brilleaux formed in 1999 playing mostly Feelgood and obscure British R'n'B covers. Since their formation however the band has evolved into something that encompasses more than just their R'n'B roots. In places there is still a garage-like quality to their blues based songs but the use of horns, female vocals and funky wah wah guitar brings a sense of southern style into the mix. Song-wise the album is all original material coming mostly from the pen of vocalist Graham Clark and guitarist Bruce Rolands and it's obvious from the somewhat aggressive lyrical stance taken in places that they don't suffer fools or politicians lightly. In some places though this goes over the top and tends to detract from proceedings. Overall the band are too derivative to be as edgy or progressive as they would like to think they are but there is a certain Stonesy swagger to what they do and the impression is one of a band who enjoys their work.
