Rhian Sheehan: Tiny Blue Biosphere
By Melanie Selby
Wellington's Rhian Sheehan has taken his spacial electronica to new levels in this album which employs the help of friends and colleagues including Paul McLaney, Anika Moa, Jess Chambers and flautist Kirsten Johnstone. Chambers sings in Sunshine and Hiding Place and her gorgeous voice is part of what makes this album something special. Hiding Place is simply stunning. Boundaries and Patterns in Time are very much Rhian Sheehan trademark electronica, Anon is Sheehan on acoustic guitar and the closing track features a 16-piece string orchestra to confirm his compositional confidence and doubtless further his international appeal. Sheehan's interest in the composition of the universe is evident, not only in the song titles but in the music. It has a spacey, somewhat ethereal feel. Te Karanga, with lyrics and vocals contributed by Anika Moa, is the second of Sheehan's tracks to be selected for the huge-selling Café Del Mar compilations. Released by LOOP, this album should be in your CD collection.
