Various: Breakin Wreckwordz

By Andrew Hughes
Holding down 17 tracks with ease, the 'Breakin Wreckwordz' team members supply a comprehensive insight into Auckland's hip hop scene. This compilation, which is the first official release from the label, has some oldies like Bang your Head from Insomniacs and Most Vainest by Cyphanetik and Con Psy. Two songs immediately stand out. My Way is a classic with a beautiful beat provided by the seemingly unknown Official. The other is punch line-laced violin banger Shimmy from Quest. Both include former Dubious Bros. emcee Tyna, who has tweaked his style since last year. In my opinion he is the strongest emcee in this line-up. Insomniacs have to be praised for the creative element on Super Heroes which samples 3 News and has a movie-like mid song interlude. Cyphanetik and Con Psy continue their match up on the humorous concept track How to be a Hater (produced by 4130) where they break down how to verbally offend in order to boost self-confidence. Kwierest has me mouthing the words to her hip hop influenced r'n'b track Talk With Me, and all round quality act Usual Suspects derive their inspiration from European guitars on Profile and Press Conference. Overall the album is of a high standard and a thorough introduction. It will: leave you in anticipation for Tyna & JB's EP and Insomniacs 'Hand Me Down Pimps' debut album. It won't: make you wonder why New Zealand hip hop isn't up to scratch.
