Jennine Bailey: You Go To My Head

By Peter Dent
I'm sorry, but Norah Jones doesn't stand a chance anymore! Who would have thought that a Christchurch Jazz School graduate could take local musicians and local studios, and then improve on some of the greatest songs ever written? Much of the credit for this wonderful album must go to co-producer/ pianist and all-around nice guy, Tom Rainey. Three of the twelve tunes are originals, co-penned with Rainey (whom Bailey calls a "genius"); the rest - fantastic cover renditions including Shouldn't You Oughta Be In Love, Blackbird, Norah Jones' I Can't Make You Love Me and Christine McVie's Songbird. All are given the immaculate Jennine Bailey treatment. The backing musicians - all incredible - never get in the way of Bailey's gorgeous voice. In fact, many of the arrangements are purposefully spacious to give Jennine room to make her interpretations come alive. This is a hugely ambitious and successful album, well worth checking out.
