Various: Return of the Boomshwack
By Jacob Conner
Seems weird that this should be our first ever breaks compilation but that's the claim. Not entirely indigenous, Kog selectors Chris Chetland and Timmy Schumacher include a fistful of Ockers to round out the collection. Kiwi king-hit is antiform's Lardass. Minuit provide a good advertisement for their new CD, ex-pat Freq Nasty's Fresh reminds of Leftfield's Afrika Shox with its malevolent cyborg vocal line, and the producer's own Lay it Down simulates Boomfunk MCs molesting the Miami Vice theme.
Friendly says it all with an 'uh-uh-eh-eh-oo-oo' vocal line on Glottal Stomp and Smart'n'Pocket's Kickflip Manual is an interesting collision of skateboard commentary, sound effects and guitar riff snippets. The Aussie bracket in the second half really gets motivational, dissolving into gangster hip-hop pastiche closer Drive By Hits. As you'd expect from Kog the sound quality is excellent. It's cool, I like it. Frenetic funk action for the future.
