Heavy Lounge Suite: Heavy Lounge Suite
By Truda Chadwick
East coast of Brazil meets West Coast of New Zealand, they told me. And indeed it is. Heavy Lounge Suite are a Raglan-based trio and this, their debut CD offers an engaging combination of brazillia, afro-cuban and toe-tapping jazz that combines the serious with the slightly insane. Mark Kington (vocals, didgeridoo!), Cameron Olsen (acoustic guitar) and Freddie Limbert (stand-up bass), have created something unique here, moving through Jobim classics and their own original material like tap dancers on a New York street corner trying to avoid the rain - all rhythm and groove and flair. Recorded in single takes at Snout Studio in the Marlborough Sounds, it does have its warts and bumps. Some of the tracks are a bit long and a percussionist would tighten up the timing, but hey, this is a great debut. They will be fantastic live so catch 'em in a funky bar some late night, order a cocktail, light a cigar, dance with a stranger, have some fun and smile all the way home. Oh and don't forget to buy this very nicely packaged CD from www.heavyloungesuite.co.nz
