Greg Johnson: Here Comes The Caviar
By Tony Parker
Since becoming part of the New Zealand musical landscape Greg Johnson has steadily grown into the singer/songwriter role and in the process has built a lasting body of recognisable kiwi classics. And while it may not seem like the usual musical route to take, relocation to Santa Monica in 2002 and constant gigging with guitarist Ted Brown has seen further progression with a mature, more consistent approach as evidenced on Johnson's newest, 'Here Comes The Caviar'. Recorded in the US with Brown and Minibar members Malcolm Cross and Sid Jordan, the record has that LA singer/songwriter vibe to it with smooth harmonies, jangling guitars and Johnson's distinctive voice and piano playing. Things are a little more upbeat than usual for a Johnson recording too, but maybe that's the LA influence too. What's not there are the shiny production values inherent in many stateside recordings. Instead there's a reassuring warmth to the record that makes 'Here Comes The Caviar' instantly identifiable as a Greg Johnson recording, albeit one of his best so far.
