The Taming of the Wasps: Paselode
By Claire Nelson
The dictionary defines Pase as a maneuver in bullfighting provoking the bull to charge, and Lode means something to do with the formation of rock. Hell, I have no idea if this is what Paselode had planned, but it has a pretty close relevance to this Wellington five-piece... plenty of charge and a whole lotta rock in one crafty package. Not since HLAH has sleazy rock been this good, but Paselode have an edge all of their own. Retro organs blend with the dirty rock riffs, while Gerome Mills' dark vocals create the impression that this is the music the devil would get down to after a bottle of whisky. Nic McGowan has produced an intensely crafted album, rough and raw with a definite sense of humour. But the fact that the band even took the time to turn an old church into an ideal recording space is proof of their care and dedication to their art. 'The Taming of the Wasps' is a wild and wonderful result of this commitment, so make sure you get your dirty mitts on it. Out on Wildside Records.
