Planet Paris: Out of the Blue
By Mike Moroney
Nikki Donovan and Don McKenzie were both tutors at Tai Poutini Polytech and came together as Planet Paris in 1993, first as an acoustic duo and then branching out to original work and recording. This is their second CD and features all original compositions. Immediately reminiscent of Mary Coughlan, the vocal style is enchanting and each song has its story. I could've been fooled that this was a substantial band playing, but for the programmed drums (always hard to make convincing) and the odd cheesy synth sound. Some great feels and lovely guitar work; a lot of these songs would have stood well with just guitar and vocal as Donovan's lyrics deserve more space and darkness. This album has grown on me considerably since first listening to it. The
complimentary textures of the vocals and the backing make it very inviting.
