Various: A Tasting
By Jacob Conner
This sampler of Hawkes Bay music on the Hit Your Head label opens with Big Blue Blanket, who deserve at least some sort of endurance award. They provide a fun enough ska hop and The Disorderlies begin in the same vein before veering off in a punkier direction. More hardcore offerings follow with an enjoyable stomp from Tempo 38 and early Metallica stylings of Angel Hammer. It becomes evident that this collection is themed along a consistent ‘guitars and testosterone’ punk/ska/metal axis. Unfortunately, this review copy is skipping like crazy so I can’t fairly comment on the later inclusions. Although the package is a flimsy CDR job, the bands are presented well with clean and clear recordings. The project is not unlike Auckland’s Crawlspace Records compilations, a platform for local heroes to be heard outside their region. As such, ‘A Tasting’ serves up a bounty of raw meat and gristle from the fruitbowl of NZ. If interested email hityourheadmusic@clear.net.nz
