Dead Pan Rangers: We've Done So Much Good For So Many People

By Shaun Chait
This cheekily titled second album from Dead Pan Rangers will probably do a bit for quite a few people. Calling themselves 'experimentally skewed indie pop', the Hamilton trio ply their trade with lots of instrumentals laced with eloquent, expressive guitar musings and murmurs. There's a fair dose of tracks with vocals, but for my money DPR sound better when they let the music do the story telling. There's a downbeat, dark quality to these numbers hidden just underneath the surface. That said, the album will remain very listenable to those not that way inclined. Of the instrumentals, Dickslowfastone and Hiding Iris are highlights. Elsewhere, Alpha Bits has a nice sad vibe, while the punchy Tank would be mindblowing live. Dead Pan Rangers are big on the atmospherics. Sometimes a bit more oxygen is needed, but on significantly more occasions the listener is left floating.
