Schizo Phrenia: No-one's Laughing

By Tony Parker
New Plymouth band Schizo Phrenia describe their music as pagan, distorted heavy rock and one listen to the album confirms they are indeed a heavy bunch. Formed by Michael and Elizabeth Wheeler, aka Jack. B. Nimble and Skin Lizzie, the band do a nice line in loud distorted guitars and thundering drums with vocals that alternately soar (Lizzie), or growl menacingly (Jack) over the top. It's a relentless sound that takes no prisoners and to their credit the band manages to capture the essence of what they are about both sonically and lyrically. However the barrage of guitar noise is a little hard to take over the space of a whole album and Jack's discourses on the evils of the modern world tend towards a simplistic view of things. Definitely one for the devoted heavy rock fan.
