Dead End Beat: Dead End Beat
By Claire Nelson
I was living in Wellington back when Breathe first hit the scene, with their clean, infectious groove and an album (so rightly) called 'PopLife'. Well, things have changed, and just as I have turned myself into a Jafa, the boys of Breathe have turned into gravelly rockers. Welcome to Dead End Beat. But it's not really Breathe-gone-rough. Guy Fisher vacated the drum stool, Rick Cranson took over where he left off, and the new sound is mean and low down dirty. The songs were originally written with an old drum machine, before Trinity Roots' Rikki Gooch transformed the beats into the real thing in time for recording. The self-titled album explodes with the kick-ass opener Everybody Here Wants You; it's catchy, it's fast-paced, it's dark and it's mean, baby! From there the rest is... well, more of the same to be honest. Not entirely a bad thing, but don't be looking for too much variety here. It's a hypnotic package of pounding beats, grunty guitar and raw vocals... an album of persistent rock'n'roll which will hit you when you least suspect it. Out now on Sony.
