Rob Smith: Dirty Sax

By Peter Dent
Although immediately likeable, this CD is really a Jeckyl and Hyde situation! Nine tracks were recorded with Roland E86 sequencer backing (with a little Flugelhorn and Vocals), and the other seven tracks were recorded with a live jazz band in Napier. The problem being that the 'Roland' tracks are very modern and contemporary-sounding, while the live tracks are mostly authentic-sounding Dixieland! Nonetheless, the mix of styles and sounds keep the listener attentive and entertained. The live tracks feature a crack team of fun players: USA's Steamboat Willie on Trumpet and Vocals, young Wil Sargeson on Piano, 'Mr. Big Band' Rodger Fox on Trombone, Gavin Mather on Drums, David Ferguson on Bass, Ray Ball on Banjo, and Smith on Sax. Dave Proud plays some Flugelhorn solos on the programmed tracks, along with Smith on Sax and Vocals. For my money, MVP goes to Steamboat Willie on the live tracks, as his voice is so authentic-sounding; you'd swear you were sitting in a speakeasy somewhere in the Mississippi Delta during prohibition! Ha ha. Lots of fun.
