The Pill: Right Between The Eyes
By Nick Batt
While we mainly think of Gore as being the Country and Western capital of the free world, local band The Pill show that '80s influenced rock is still alive and well in the deep south. 'Right between the Eyes' is the group's debut album and marks a very promising beginning. The Pill (Bradley Craig: vocals; Mark Parry, Ben Harvey: guitars; Steve Parry: drums; Chris Phillips: bass) originally started as a covers band gigging around Southland before eventually adding their own material with great success. Recorded over one weekend at Christchurch's Avalanche Studios by Rob Mayes, the album is pretty much edgy driving guitar based rock and power ballads. While they don't break any new ground, The Pill offer an honest version of old school NZ rock with the emphasis on music and not on sophisticated electronic trickery. In this respect The Pill is just what the doctor ordered.
