Nigel Gavin: Thrum

By Nick Batt
Let's get one thing absolutely clear from the beginning - Nigel Gavin knows how to play the guitar. Gavin is actually something of a guitar legend having played as part of Robert Fripp's League of Crafty Guitarists, The Jews Brothers Band, Nairobi Trio, and The Bluebottom Stompers and this is just a small part of his playing history. 'Thrum' is 15 tracks of Gavin playing his custom 7-string 'Tui' acoustic. This music is truly unique, blending elements of classical/Spanish and folk to produce something quite splendid. The style is completely his own and hard to categorise (think Leo Kottke meets Bruce Cockburn but without the singing). The album was recorded live straight to disk without overdubs or drop-ins, quite an achievement in its own right when you consider the intricacy of the music. The overall impression is one of quality - Gavin is a true craftsman and has created an excellent body of work. If you own an acoustic guitar then you should have this album
