Ben Morrison: Debut

By Jennifer Scott
The playing may be technically perfect on this recording by 16-year-old Christchurch violinist Ben Morrison, but the repertoire chosen is less impressive. That Ben is one of the country's top young musicians is unquestioned. His Ben Morrison Quartet won the prestigious 2002 Chamber Music NZ School Music Contest and he has performed numerous high profile concerts. This Rajon Music Group release features a mix of contemporary and classic pieces (including Origami Grappelli by Kiwi composer, musician and producer David Selfe), and Ben's violin is warm and fulsome, displaying his enviable mastery of this challenging instrument. Signed with entertainment agent Gray Bartlett (who plays guitar on the Mark Knopfler-penned Local Hero which is a pointer) Ben is obviously being marketed to the same people who bought Hayley Westenra's CD in droves. That this album showcases a remarkable talent is undeniable, but it only hints at Ben's potential virtuosity. Here's hoping he continues down the chamber music and jazz paths and follows his 'Debut' with a musical graduation.
