Various: Metrobeatz: Transtasman Drum n' Bass

By Ania Glowacz
A quality release from excellent local drum 'n bass label fabel, including our own Bulletproof alongside Melbourne d'nbers DJ Motive & DJ Sean, plus lesser known (for now) artists Afterdark, Pacific Heights, Sardi, Greg Packer, One Native, C-Form and Vice-Versa representing both sides of the ditch. There are not many visits from Australia's representatives to these shores, so this is a good start. Veering to the lighter, melodic, dancefloor-friendly, 'funky' drum 'n bass set as popularised by the likes of England's DJ Zinc, Brazil's Patife and Auckland's Glide club nights, there are no harsh edges, lots of rolling 'deep' bass grooves (read, speaker-blowing low Hz emissions), a few jungle influences and those aggravating-to-some female vocal lines that just keep repeating over and over... Having said that, there's plenty to appreciate if a stronger style of drum 'n bass is not your cup of choysa. This may even appeal to house-heads and is certainly worth the listen, although the Bulletproof track is incredibly weak and the worst thing I have heard them do - past the Concord Dawn intro it just goes nowhere. Track seven onwards things get better, when the tunes start kicking a bit more d 'n b butt. Best rollout is C-Form.
