Various: Brat 3 - Marvin
By Shaun Chait
'Marvin' is the third offering in this excellent series assembling some of Christchurch's finest. With 64 applicants culled down to the 13 that made it, you get a good indication of the strength of the Christchurch scene at present, and with Salmonella Dub and Slim leading the charge you get an idea of the broad genre base these tracks encompass. There's everything here from the metal of Cripple Mr Onion and jazz reggae of the Otautahi Allstars to the ska sound of 4 Man Bob. Something for everyone indeed, but my picks are Fuce with the melodic, commercially viable rock track Restless, Solo Bravo's Something About You - pop augmented by '70s organ that just makes its way into your head, and the sweet sounds and harmonies of Mea (World Away). As is usual with compilations, there are tracks you will skip, differing according to your leanings. Excellent overall recording quality and they are thinking big too, with distribution overseas lined up. Available through Border and Smoke CDs.
