Darcy Perry Band: Blues 4 Dad

By Tony Parker
The Darcy Perry Band is a tight electric blues band centred around the BB King-influenced guitar and R&B inflected vocals of Darcy Perry. Dedicated to Perry's late father, 'Blues 4 Dad' was recorded at the Java Jive and it succeeds in capturing the band working their way through a set of mainly jazz, blues and R&B standards as well as an original Perry slow blues in the title track. Each song is used to showcase not only Perry's intricate guitar solos and harmonica but also the piano of Simen 'Bluekeys' Taylor who proves that even Norwegians can play the blues. All in all it's a solid outing that could have benefited from the inclusion of a couple of more up-tempo numbers and some trimming of the length of some songs. That aside, 'Blues 4 Dad' will be a welcome addition to the limited canon of local blues releases and should appeal to both blues purists and the casual listener.
