Various: Soapbox Volume 1
By Claire Nelson
The great thing about NZ music month is we get to hear all the music out there that doesn't get the usual airplay. For example, take the new Soapbox compilation, a collection of tracks from independent Kiwi musos. Compiled by Smalltime Records, and based on Nelson's Soapbox music magazine, 'Soapbox Volume 1' ranges across a wide variety of genres including punk, rock, hip-hop and electronica. Such compilations often give an extreme variation of styles to portray all areas of the local talent and this is no exception offering a pick'n'mix selection from the smooth beats of 3/4 Water to the heavy rock of 1QA. There are some absolute gems here, one of my favourites being the funky opener from Minuit. Mother Guru and Ejector are heavier while Degrees K and Gasoline Cowboy cover the soft and the sweet. Yellow Seven and the fabulous Funk'n'Slo'Cuts do it for the groovers. With such an enormously wide variety you may not delight in every track but no doubt you will find something for you. Most importantly, you'll get a taste of what else our little country has to offer.
