Dating Godot: Granity Mill
By Shaun Chait
Dating Godot is the shopfront for Nelson singer-songwriter Andrew Spittle. Armed with little more than a guitar and his voice, he has come up with something special. At eight tracks in under 17 minutes (it feels like longer - in a good way!), this is not a fashion parade for the dressiest songs in town. Spittle prefers his models laid bare, and when one takes in the CD packaging as well, there is a minimalist feel to everything. 'Granity Mill' is sad and beautiful stuff - gorgeous in an almost mournful way. In between the simple opening and closing bookends We Destroy Those Who Create and Red Streaks are melancholic, haunting tracks like Granity, which builds up quite majestically, as does Peninsula Song. The lyrics are poetic and generally excellent - this guy has a good command of English! Written, performed and produced by Spittle 'Granity Mill' is a stirring rainy day companion. Short but bittersweet.
