Mike Brosnan: Wasted Time

By Tim Page
Highly acclaimed internationally for his fingerstyle acoustic guitar playing, Mike Brosnan is a one of the survivors of the music business. Originally training as a classical pianist, Brosnan has imported piano techniques into his guitar style, which when combined with adept ability at slide guitar, makes for a distinctive guitar sound. Now based in Bonn, Germany, Brosnan tours extensively on the international acoustic blues circuit, and is a regular contributor to acoustic folk, rock and world music festivals world-wide. 'Wasted Time' was recorded partly in Wellington, and partly in Germany, with both Kiwi and German musicians, including such local notables as Wayne Mason and George Barris. Extensive use of harmonica played by world harmonica champion Marc Breitfelder creates a great musical texture. Interesting to see how well the melding of German and Kiwi playing styles works. Excellent musical arrangements and a mature, distinctive voice, display a versatility of genre that spans folk, blues, country and rock. Good musical phrasing, thoughtful lyrics, and diversity of style makes for an original, well produced album.
