David A. Edwards: Mantis Shaped and Worrying
By Oliver Labone
To say that this recording had me stumped would be an understatement. Within seconds of beginning to listen to this CD I was struck by the thought, "What the hell is this guy trying to achieve?". Mr. Edwards' latest work is a strange assortment of random squeaks, squawks, and squeals accompanied by a dreary, mono-tone voice reciting obscure diatribes. My own taste in music is broad and I am normally able to find something of value in almost everything I listen to. This, however, is something completely different which, try as I might, I can not find any merit in. Edwards has two previous CD releases as well as a book. His own bio describes this release as, "....an un-categorisable masterpiece of introspection and experimentation". Uncategorisable I would certainly agree with; masterpiece I can't.
