Jon Hooker and Billy Vallance: Lovehound

By Rachel Fallon
After many years working in various local Celtic and blues bands around NZ, Vallance and Hooker have now collaborated on their first blues/folk/country album together. Recorded over three years in both studio and live venues, this is a collection of some of their most recent originals mixed with cover versions of such blues greats as Robert Johnson and Blind Willy Johnson. Though it could be said that these covers do not do justice to the original recordings, this combination allows the duo to demonstrate their skills as musicians with Hooker on 6- and 12-string acoustic guitar and Vallance playing harmonica and percussion. This musical ability seems to surpass their vocal talent which is assisted by the addition of various guest musicians and singers, including James Wilkinson. Recorded mainly at Nightshift Studio, Christchurch, produced and engineered by Arnie van Bussel, this album has been well received in the South Island where they have been delighting audiences with their live performances.
